High deficits underscore limited fiscal space post-pandemic
Economic issues are at the forefront of citizens’ minds, yet governments must respond in a challenging fiscal landscape. In 2023, the average fiscal deficit in OECD countries reached 4.6% of GDP, up from 2.9% in the years preceding the COVID-19 pandemic (2015-19). Addressing complex, long-term challenges will require strategic management of constrained resources within this limited fiscal space.
These fiscal pressures come as action is needed to respond to demographic, green and digital transitions, and low levels of public trust. Fewer than four in ten people (39%) across OECD countries report trusting their national government, and only 37% believe their government effectively balances the interests of current and future generations.? ?

Effective governance is essential to ensure AI development and deployment are safe, secure and trustworthy, with policies and regulation that foster innovation and competition.Learn more

Despite progress in recent years, more work needs to be done across all OECD countries to secure gender equality, with women and girls still facing inappropriate disadvantages and barriers in most spheres of social and economic life. Gender equality must remain a priority, as a matter of basic human rights and long-term economic wellbeing and prosperity. It drives economic growth, strengthens democracy, enhances social cohesion and increases the well-being of all members of society.Learn more

As the trend toward cross-border supply chains increases, new challenges are emerging around sustainability, efficiency, and resilience. This growing complexity calls for policies that take a whole-of-chain approach to supply chain management and global trade.Learn more
